What is missed-call text-back for trades?

Missed-call text-back uses a configured phone trigger to send an approved SMS after an unanswered call. It can ask for the job type, location and preferred timing, then put the conversation and answers in the inbox or system you choose.

When you're on the tools, up a ladder or mid-job, the text gives the caller a useful next step until you can respond. Builders can see a specific handover flow and use their own figures in the builder missed-call calculator.

How missed-call text-back works

The chain runs on its own the moment a call goes unanswered:

  • Send the approved SMS. "Thanks for calling [Your Firm]. What do you need doing and where?" The message and timing are agreed before launch.
  • Capture the job. A short back-and-forth collects the essentials: what the work is, the address or postcode, and the best number to reach them.
  • Apply your routing rules. The answers can follow the categories and handover routes you approve, with uncertain cases ready for a person to decide.
  • Sync to your CRM. The lead, messages and job details land together in your CRM, ready for you to pick up.

You still decide who to call and what to quote. The automation keeps every enquiry visible and ready for a response.

Set it up around how you work

The point isn't a generic auto-reply. It's one built around your trade:

  • Different messages for out-of-hours versus a call missed mid-job
  • Emergency work routed straight to your phone, not a queue
  • The right questions for your jobs: a boiler fault needs different details from a full rewire

This is standard workflow automation, tuned to the tools trades already use. See how it fits the rest of the job on our automation for trades page.

What the first response needs to do

The first text should show who is responding, ask for one useful detail and explain what happens next. That gives the caller a clear route to share the job while you stay focused on the work in front of you.

The workflow records the trigger, message and reply time. Those timestamps let you review the real response pattern in your own business without relying on a generic industry benchmark.

Pair it with the rest of the follow-up

Text-back captures the enquiry. Two more automations can carry the agreed next steps:

  • Quote follow-up. A scheduled, polite sequence keeps the decision moving and gives the customer an easy route to reply.
  • Automated review requests at job completion. When a job is marked done, an approved message gives the customer a direct route to leave a Google review.

Together these three steps create one connected path from first enquiry to post-job follow-up. We've packaged the messages and checklist in the booked-job playbook.
